Interview with Cindy Telisak

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

Cindy Telisak is the owner of Jacob’s Reward Farm, home to the South’s first fiber CSA.  I’ve known of Cindy for a couple of years, but I’ve really started to get to know Cindy and her farm this last year.  She hosts a fiber get together every third and fourth Saturdays in her Little Red Barn. I’ve attended a few of the fourth Saturdays and it’s always a good time.  Everybody is working on something different - spinning, knitting, crochet, weaving - and the conversation and creativity boost is a balm to our over scheduled lives.  On top of this, Cindy will gladly give you a tour of her farm.  You’ll meet sheep, chickens, alpacas, and livestock guardian dogs.  In fact, Cindy has just taken ownership of two adorable puppy LGDs.  You can read all about them on her blog.

Cindy is teaching Take Charge of Your Yarn: Make it Yourself, an intro to drop spindling, and Unique Yarns with Art Techniques, making art yarn with a spinning wheel.

DFWFF: How did you get started teaching?
Cindy: I have taught many things throughout my life, depending on my current passion.  For several years I was a certified natural childbirth teacher, and I enjoyed the privilege of helping couples bring their children into the world.  Whatever I love, I love to teach.  This past year, I was very excited to teach over a hundred people to spin on a drop spindle, and a dozen people to knit, at the studio (the Little Red Barn) at the farm.  I love the challenge of coming up with just the right way to explain a concept so that the learner catches on and succeeds.  Our farm hosts quite a few homeschool groups, scout troops, and interested families, and I get to teach them about farm life and the fiber process from hoof-to-hat, so to speak.  I love to see their faces light up!

DFWFF: What inspires you most?
Cindy: I’m inspired by the idea that spinning, knitting, crocheting, and returning to a lifestyle closer to our raw natural resources, can help bring people together into meaningful community.  There is something very powerful about cutting out a lot of extraneous middle-men and connecting hands and fiber, hands and simple tools, hands and dirt, and hearts and hearts.  I love how friendships and bonds grow in the fiber community.

DFWFF: What project are you most excited about right now?
Cindy: The Fiber CSA at our farm has exceeded all my expectations and continues to grow.  The support, fun, camaraderie, generosity, artistic inspiration and synergy will change your life if you hang around long enough.  This growing group of fiber friends humbles and inspires me every day.  They are welcoming and joyful.  It’s an honor to get to nurture it along.  The fiber is important, and a common thread in our community life, but it’s the people who keep the heart beating.

DFWFF: Have you been to the DFW Metroplex before?  If yes, what did you like most about our area?  If not, what are you looking forward to most?
Cindy: I have lived in the northeast DFW area for the past 20+ years.  For a girl who moved around with a military family growing up, this is a big change and I have loved the opportunity to finally put down roots.  I love being an adopted Texan, except in the worst of the hot summer!  My city of Parker, TX is famous as the home of Southfork Ranch, of “Dallas” fame, so we get our share of tourists out seeing the sights.

Extra Spots Available in Sold Out Classes!

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

Good News! We are pleased to announce that we have been able to add space in each of Anne Hanson’s classes during Fiber Fest. At the same time, an additional spot has opened up in the Tunisian Crochet Basics class. If you were unable to get into a class that was sold out, we have a very limited number of spaces available. For the time being, each of these additional class spaces must be registered and paid for through our PayPal registration system. First come, first served!

Early Registration update and Wait List policy

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Based on the registration numbers so far, the 2011 will be a banner year for DFW Fiber Fest!

To give you some idea of the numbers for early class registrations for the 2011 event, we are already at class capacity for Anne Hanson’s Advanced Lace Knitting class and two of her other classes are close to filling. If you are thinking about taking one of Anne’s classes, be sure to register soon!

As the classes do sell out, we will maintain a Wait List for the filled classes. If you would like to be placed on the Wait List for any class, please email your request to our Registrations Chairperson, Liz Grigorian, at registrations@dfwfiberfest.org . If we receive a cancellation for any of the classes, Liz will contact individuals on the Wait List in the order that they are placed on the List. If you are contacted as a part of the Wait List, youwill have a five (5) day grace period to respond to the offer to be placed on the class roster for that class before the class spot is offered to the next person on the List. (This grace period will be reduced to 48 hours beginning
March 1, 2011.)

We are also happy to say we have over 200 Fans on the DFW Fiber Fest Facebook page. If you are not a fan, go to Facebook and Like us! Once we have 300 fans, we will conduct a random drawing for one of our logo bags.

Registration starts tomorrow!

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Online Registration for DFW Fiber Fest 2011 opens Saturday at 10am CST.   Please mark your calendars and share with your fiber friends, guilds, and groups!

  • When you are finished, click either the “Checkout” or “Checkout with PayPal” button in the view cart window to complete your registration.   The “Checkout” option is for using a Credit Card through PayPal while the “Checkout with PayPal” option is for payment of funds from your PayPal account.   (If you are not logged in to PayPal, you may not see the latter button.)
  • You may also stop and return later by clicking the View Cart button (at the bottom) to resume your session.   Note that holding a class in your cart does not guarantee registration; your space will not be reserved until the purchase is complete.   Once a class is full, the “Add to Cart” option will no longer be active and will be replaced with a “Sold Out” indicator.
  • If signing up for more than one person, be sure to indicate the names of all students along with their email addresses in the PayPal “Instructions to Seller” field.
  • If choosing the “Entire Weekend” option, do not forget to indicate your class choices in PayPal’s Text field.   Please be certain that none of the classes you are signing up for are Sold Out.
  • We will use your Paypal email address to communicate with you, and your shipping address if we need to mail you anything.   Please ensure they are correct.   If you would prefer a different email address is used, please note it in the “Add special instructions to the seller” box.

If you have any questions at all, please email us at info@dfwfiberfest.org, or call (214) 799-1347.

We’re very excited about the line-up for 2011 and are looking forward to seeing everybody there!

Announcements for DFW Fiber Fest 2011

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010
All - we hope everybody had a safe and fun Labor Day weekend, and that fiber was involved in some way.  :)

We’re excited to announce that our national teachers for 2011 are: Anne Hanson (knit), Robyn Chachula (crochet) and Mary Beth Temple (knit & crochet).  Mary Beth will also be our featured Friday night speaker.   Our theme this year is “Sophomore to Senior: Going to the Next Level”.

We’re finalizing the schedule with the local teachers in the next couple of weeks and will have registration open for classes by mid-October.  Watch this space for more details!  Save the date:  Grapevine Convention Center, April 8-10, 2011.

Finally, it is with sad hearts that we announce that one of the founders of DFW Fiber Fest, Margo Lynn Hablutzel, has decided to leave the Board. Since she moved out of the DFW area three years ago, Margo Lynn has continued to work as a board member and wanted to assist in the transition to a new Board this year. The transition having been accomplished more rapidly than expected, she has decided to step aside and allow someone local to take the fifth Board seat. Margo Lynn had the vision to start DFW Fiber Fest and was a major force in its organization for the last five years. We are forever grateful to her for starting the event. We wish her well in her future fiber endeavors, and hope to see her visiting DFW Fiber Fest as her travel plans allow.
