Top Down Sweaters with Karen Whooley

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Top-down sweater construction is not just for knitters! Karen Whooley teaches crocheters how to create a top-down raglan style sweater or cardigan in a 6-hour class at the 2010 DFW FiberFest. Join fellow crocheters as you complete a toddler size sweater in class! Yes, I did say complete!! Karen will teach you which 3 measurements you need to take, how to work with gauge for a perfect fit, and how to make the sweater in ONE piece. This class is limited to 25 students, so reserve your space now for Friday, April 9, 2010.

For more information, see the class description .

Karen Whooley was recently on Getting Loopy - the crochet podcast hosted by Mary Beth Temple, author of The Secret Language of Knitters and Hooked for Life: Adventures of a Crochet Zealot. Check out her episode here.

I will also be on Getting Loopy, live tonight at 8pm CST. You can listen live tonight, or anytime, by visiting this link.

Fiber Fest, Day One

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Wow - what a day! I meant to have photos today, but I forgot the camera. I’ll have them tomorrow.

From all accounts, the classes were a hit and the students loved them.

The vendors - very luscious, yummy yarns and tools for sale. On the 20-30 minutes I was able to sneak away from the registration desk I found some beautiful yarn at Brooks Farm; the Great Yarn Company has the popular Flat Feet socks, plus the *gorgeous* Blue Heron metallic yarn; bonny beads has lovely shawl pins & stitch markers; the Shabby Sheep has hilarious t-shirts and neat project bags; I wanted to just pet and fondle the glowing silk roving at Spinning Straw into Gold’s booth; and the wood turned tools at the Knotwork booth were to-die-for. And that’s less than half our vendors! I need to explore more of them tomorrow.

Mary Kay and Michelle did a fabulous job with our Fashion Show this evening. We had two local designers (I’ll get their names tomorrow); an international one — Jenny King, also a featured teacher; a trunk show from the Woolie Ewe; and some retail designs from Anthropologie. Along with the eye candy, we had great door prizes from each of our vendors to give away. Finally, at the end we invited members of the audience to show off their own creations.

Our basket for Chemo Caps is nearly full! What a great response - thank you! Keep ‘em coming.

What a great day! I had a great time. Now I need to recharge for tomorrow.

Up tomorrow - photos of the event and our raffle prizes up for offer!

T-minus one day

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

DFW Fiber Fest starts tomorrow. The board is spending the day getting the conference center ready - setting up the vendors, arranging the classrooms, making sure all the handouts are in order, and doing a practice run on the fashion show.

How are you preparing for Fiber Fest? Finishing up your homework? Gathering class supplies? Raiding the piggy bank? Finishing up a chemo cap?

Share your preparations with us!

Fashion Show Friday Night

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Our fashion show on Friday night will show garments from the yarn industry, retail and a local designer.

Instead of incorporating the small number of teacher and student submissions into the show, we’re going to have a brief Show & Tell session after the Fashion show. Bring something you’re proud of to show off!

The show starts at 7pm. Admission is free to registered students of DFW Fiber Fest. Admission to the public costs $10.

There will be light refreshments and drinks available. And we’ll have some awesome door prizes to give away as always! Come have fun with us Friday night!

Update to Fashion Show submission guidelines

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

We are so sorry if we did not make ourselves clear, but student/teacher submissions to the Fashion Show do not have to be original designs. Please submit articles of clothing of which you are proud of making for consideration. We want the student/teacher part of the show to have a show and tell feel to it. We do have a deadline for submissions, and that would be April 15th. So get those photos in!
