Charity Recipient for 2011 DFW Fiber Fest

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

We would like to announce that the recipient of this year’s charity drive at the DFW Fiber Fest is the Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home (CPCH) in Denton, TX.

CPCH is a long term foster care facility for kids ages 5-17 who are unable to live with their families for a variety of reasons. The Home provides a safe environment for the kids to live in along with counseling, life training and healthcare. They attend public schools in Denton.

The Home also maintains a growing Single Parent Family Program that provides housing, counseling and job and life skills training to single parents and their children. These families are given a year to live in a duplex on campus where they can rebuild their lives and develop tools to help them succeed when they are back out on their own.

DFW Fiber Fest would like to show our love and support to the kiddos and families that live on campus in Denton by accepting knitted, crocheted or woven scarves, hats and lap blankets. These items should be made with machine washable fibers.

The items will be going to both boys and girls of all ages - so your imagination is the limit when choosing colors and patterns. Scarves and caps for teenagers, caps for grade school kids, lap blankets for kids who are needing a bit of comfort that is all their own in a place that’s new to them.

Thanks in advance! Our Participants have always come through with great support for our charities - so I know this year won’t be any different!

Can’t wait to see you in April!!

Charity Drive

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

This year’s charity item drive is for Jonathan’s Place - a children’s shelter in Dallas. We will be collecting handmade hats, scarfs, and blankets for them. They serve children age newborn - 17. Start stitching! About Jonathan’s Place: For 15 years, Jonathan’s Place has been taking care of the Dallas area’s youngest victims of abuse. Jonathan’s Place provides this care through two programs – a “home-style” emergency shelter for abused, abandoned and neglected children and a Foster & Adoptive Family Program. The emergency shelter provides specialized services and 24-hour residential care and is the only emergency shelter in Dallas County that provides residential services for children in crisis under the age of 10. In the Foster & Adoptive Family Program, Jonathan’s Place recruits potential foster and adoptive families, conducts a comprehensive training program and verifies the families as either foster, foster-to-adopt or adoptive families. At this point, Jonathan’s Place places children from Child Protective Services into the care of these families. Jonathan’s Place is the only organization in Dallas County and one of only a few organizations in the State of Texas that provides a continuum of care from crisis placement in an emergency shelter to placement with a foster family to, ultimately, adoption.

Thank you to all!

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

We’d like to say thank you to everybody who came to Fiber Fest this weekend! The vendors, the teachers, the students, and the browsers. We had a great time and it looked like everybody else did too!

Thank you also to everyone who donated a chemo cap - we collected 116 of them!

Finally - thank you for the candid feedback we received on the student forms. While everybody had very nice and even glowing things to say, we know we’re not perfect and can improve. We hear you - and we’ll work on those issues for next year. :-)

I’ll post more photos tomorrow - I’m off to relax more this evening.

Fiber Fest, Day One

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Wow - what a day! I meant to have photos today, but I forgot the camera. I’ll have them tomorrow.

From all accounts, the classes were a hit and the students loved them.

The vendors - very luscious, yummy yarns and tools for sale. On the 20-30 minutes I was able to sneak away from the registration desk I found some beautiful yarn at Brooks Farm; the Great Yarn Company has the popular Flat Feet socks, plus the *gorgeous* Blue Heron metallic yarn; bonny beads has lovely shawl pins & stitch markers; the Shabby Sheep has hilarious t-shirts and neat project bags; I wanted to just pet and fondle the glowing silk roving at Spinning Straw into Gold’s booth; and the wood turned tools at the Knotwork booth were to-die-for. And that’s less than half our vendors! I need to explore more of them tomorrow.

Mary Kay and Michelle did a fabulous job with our Fashion Show this evening. We had two local designers (I’ll get their names tomorrow); an international one — Jenny King, also a featured teacher; a trunk show from the Woolie Ewe; and some retail designs from Anthropologie. Along with the eye candy, we had great door prizes from each of our vendors to give away. Finally, at the end we invited members of the audience to show off their own creations.

Our basket for Chemo Caps is nearly full! What a great response - thank you! Keep ‘em coming.

What a great day! I had a great time. Now I need to recharge for tomorrow.

Up tomorrow - photos of the event and our raffle prizes up for offer!
