Accepting Applications for open Board position

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

As we announced earlier, one of our founders, Margo Lynn Hablutzel, left our Board this fall and we are in need of a fifth Board member.  We are now accepting applications for the open Board position.

About the position: For this year, the position would be as a Probationary, Non-voting member of our Board.  This simply means that the probationary board member will not have a vote on matters but would be included in all discussions and meetings. The probationary member will have a vote if a tie-breaker vote is required.   The probation period is to allow the Board to ensure that all personalities work well together. We don’t always have to all agree - but we need to be able to work together to create a successful event.

We meet once a month in person for approximately 2 hours in a central location.  In between, we have a somewhat active private Yahoo Group where we discuss business as it comes up.  We’ll probably meet twice in March, and there will be a goody bag/student packet assembly meeting towards the end of March/first of April.  For the actual event,  Board members are expected to help with setup on Thursday, April 7th, and be readily available for help the entire weekend, April 8-10.  We do allow board members to take classes, but sufficient coverage needs to be worked out with all board members prior to signup.

How to Apply: If you are interested in joining the board of DFW Fiber Fest, we will need from you a brief (up to one page) fiber “resume”- sent to info@dfwfiberfest.org.  Please include answers to the following, along with any other information you would like to share:

  • Why you are interested in serving on the DFW Fiber Fest Board of Directors?
  • What years you have attended the DFW Fiber Fest and in what capacity (student, shopper, etc.)?
  • How are you active in the Fiber community - online groups, local groups, guilds?
  • What other Fiber events have you participated in?

We want to conduct in person interviews for potential Board Members on Saturday, December 11, 2010, and would need to receive your Fiber Resume no later than December 8th.   Once we have determined all potential candidates, we will determine times and a central location for the interview.

Announcements for DFW Fiber Fest 2011

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010
All - we hope everybody had a safe and fun Labor Day weekend, and that fiber was involved in some way.  :)

We’re excited to announce that our national teachers for 2011 are: Anne Hanson (knit), Robyn Chachula (crochet) and Mary Beth Temple (knit & crochet).  Mary Beth will also be our featured Friday night speaker.   Our theme this year is “Sophomore to Senior: Going to the Next Level”.

We’re finalizing the schedule with the local teachers in the next couple of weeks and will have registration open for classes by mid-October.  Watch this space for more details!  Save the date:  Grapevine Convention Center, April 8-10, 2011.

Finally, it is with sad hearts that we announce that one of the founders of DFW Fiber Fest, Margo Lynn Hablutzel, has decided to leave the Board. Since she moved out of the DFW area three years ago, Margo Lynn has continued to work as a board member and wanted to assist in the transition to a new Board this year. The transition having been accomplished more rapidly than expected, she has decided to step aside and allow someone local to take the fifth Board seat. Margo Lynn had the vision to start DFW Fiber Fest and was a major force in its organization for the last five years. We are forever grateful to her for starting the event. We wish her well in her future fiber endeavors, and hope to see her visiting DFW Fiber Fest as her travel plans allow.

Top Down Sweaters with Karen Whooley

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Top-down sweater construction is not just for knitters! Karen Whooley teaches crocheters how to create a top-down raglan style sweater or cardigan in a 6-hour class at the 2010 DFW FiberFest. Join fellow crocheters as you complete a toddler size sweater in class! Yes, I did say complete!! Karen will teach you which 3 measurements you need to take, how to work with gauge for a perfect fit, and how to make the sweater in ONE piece. This class is limited to 25 students, so reserve your space now for Friday, April 9, 2010.

For more information, see the class description .

Board Member nominations open

Friday, June 19th, 2009

We are taking nominations for Board Members.

You can nominate yourself, or a friend. Just tell us about the person’s fiber knowledge and other experience that may be relevant to being on the Board. We do try for a mixture of interests, so may choose one person over an equally good candidate on the basis of fiber-focus if we think the Board is leaning too far one way or the other. Amount of experience matters less than an ability to attend Board meetings (monthly or more often) and a willingness to work to make the event happen.

If you are interested, or would like to nominate a friend, please email us at board@dfwfiberfest.org .

Thank you!
